About Agro Processing Industries
API focuses on crop production, particularly maize, beans, and soya beans. Over the past three years, the company has produced hybrid seeds and Open Pollinated Varieties (OPVs), while also importing fertilizers to support sustainable agriculture.
Our Location
Based in Gabiro, Nyagatare District, API operates with an independent management team overseeing daily operations.
Our Mission
API contributes to Rwanda’s National Agenda of food security by producing affordable agri‑inputs such as improved seeds and fertilizers, reducing reliance on imports.
Market Impact
Rwanda spends Rwf 5 billion annually on seed imports. Maize alone accounts for 75% of imports, with 3,000 tonnes imported yearly alongside 1,000 tonnes of wheat and soya.
Strategic Partnership for Self‑Reliance
A new private sector partnership is reducing Rwanda’s maize seed imports by producing hybrid seed locally and addressing distribution delays.
This collaboration between API, One Acre Fund, and Western Seed Company (WSC) aims to make Rwanda self‑reliant in seed production and enable surplus exports.
Benefits of Local Seed Production
- More affordable seeds for farmers
- Timely availability and distribution
- Reduced bureaucracy in procurement
- Prevention of seed deterioration during transport
- Avoidance of imported diseases and unsuitable varieties
